Hi everyone,

well after a lot of thinking this weekend i have decided that i really need to loose a tank. weekly 50% water changes on a 50, 40 and 12G plus EI and pruning is getting rather overbearing. i find myself constantly trying to catch up on something or other and as a result all 3 tanks are not at their best. if i had just one "planted" tank and a fish tank then things would be much easier.

so the rio 180 (with georges fern etc..) is now the planted tank. rekord 60 is going to be home to a few guppies and 4/5 corys in a sandy substrate.

if any of you are interested in the cube look here.

lol. i feel your pain maytee. we had handbags at dawn yesterday after another fishy conversation... it's great that our better halfs are so supportive of our hobby isn't it. i think i'd have more peace if i was a lager lout, drug dealer, football fanatic, racing driver, couch potato etc...

my fish

- look awefull
- smell bad
- make me a "nerd" (a common favourite)
- embarass her in front of friends by talking about fish

blah blah..

really, it could be a hell of a lot worse. oops i may have let onto the "other" reason i'm getting rid of a tank. he he, i just cant take it any longer, need to keep her a little happy. the fish are great but they dont keep me warm at night!!

...........fish are great but they dont keep me warm at night!!
Can't cook, iron or do the washing either!! (sexual discrimination disclaimer - I am refering to my world only).
Our "better" halves would get on great. We all should get together so we can be completely de-moralised by them. But then we'd be so engrossed in our own "nerdy" conversation we wouldn't even notice.

nah you dont want that to happen mate. mine will be teaching yours the subtle ways to kill your fish like shaking up the nutrafins, spraying hairspray, deodorant (why do they use that chocking stuff that gets stuck in your throat and leaves white residue everywhere, god knows), airfreshener etc all over your tanks.

we'd soon be beaten mate, theyre bad enough in single doses i dont think i could cope with more than one...lol

anyway. i've had one pm for the whole lot already (enquiry, not comitted ) if anyone else is interested you'd better pm me quick or it may be too late.

I feel your pain James :/ I just had to "warn" my other half (who's on the other side of the globe at the moment), that's he's coming back to a shrimp breeding tank as well as hatchery (in addition to the three other tank  ). I had to big it up massively and pretend it's only a very temporary setup (fingers crossed) ;)

But that's not very nice that she labels you as a nerd - and it's not like you "have" to talk about fish in front of friends. Though it becomes tricky when they ask "so how was your weekend" and you get into full swing about pruning and EI on three tanks over the weekend. I just try to avoid the subject.

Well I hope your lovely cube finds a good home

Hehehe i thought it was only my other half who gave out all the hassle . All i get is " if your not away playing sport, your up to your elbows in the tanks" or " why is there plants in the sink, washing up, floor, etc, etc,"
or the classic " where did that one come from " :D "had it ages honest"
Pity i cant find the room and time for the cube mate would love it.

Sorry you have to sell your cube Jimbooo. If I lived in the UK, I'd totally take it off your hands. This thread is really a downer. I hope when I get married, my other half supports my hobby, or at least doesn't make fun of it all the time. I hope you guys are exaggerating a bit, otherwise, I may chose to remain single.

:-(

lol i think she means it in the nicest possible way but it does embarass her for some reason. only the other day she introduced me to a member of staff (she's a retail store manager) and he asked about my fish. i breifly mentioned the tanks and he then said that he'd recently bought his girlfriend an oscar and 2x foot long plecs for her 100G. he thought he'd bought a sick fish as after he put them in (all together in one go) the whole tank came down with these little white spots and everything died.

what am i supposed to do. say Oh dear, thats a shame. i cant help but dive into an explination of the nitrogen cycle, the importance of gradual stocking, an account of the reasons why whitespot occurs etc.. after 10 mins i realised i'd lost him lol. i then leave the store and go home only to get it in the neck for talking fish for ages boring the arse off her staff lol. i found it quite funny really but i see her point.

the saucepans are my problem. sorry but when you've got 3 tanks worth of plants to prune where on earth am i supposed to put them whilst keeping them wet. on a weekend i have 2 sinks full, 2 buckets and in the riccia days 3 or 4 big saucepans full of plants. apparently it's not hygenic to cook with the same things you have kept fish poo infested plants in.. doesn't bother me lol...

just ordered my dennerle pressurised co2 kit... yippee. that's obviously been in the cabinet for 6 months already!!

thanks mate. realistically it causes slight tension 60% of the time. massive "me or the fish" situations once every 8 weeks or so and plain sailing for the rest of the time. lol

god i'm glad she doesn't have internet access. if any of you ever come to my flat you know NOTHING!!!

single hmm theres a thought... no i have to remind myself theres more to life than fish well plants (never was too bothered about the fish). i'd end up top of the nerd pile rather quickly. i think the only place i'd find someone willing to put up with it without restriction is on here...

there's a thought a fishy forum dating sub section for all us lonley fishy people..... lol

Hoo Wee. As a female and at one time married (10 years ago LOL). I have been there. Let me tell you that your wife probably isn't as innocent as she seems! If she likes new clothes, make up, knick knacks for the house, purses (bags) or shoes, I promise you she is buying more than she is telling you about! (probably no different than you hiding things for weeks then when she asks if it is new, you saying "this old thing?"!

In my previous life I had to pretend to spend money at the grocery store in order to have money to spend on myself.

Pay a bit more attention to her, give her a foot rub and do it without wanting something in return (if you know what I mean). Compliment her , look at her! It probably seems to her that you think the tanks are more important than she is! Some women have to be jealous of other women, but it is pretty embarrassing for her to be competing with fish tanks! (that is why you are nerdy)

Give her permission to go shopping (and that is when you work on the tanks)

I used to have to compete with an airplane of all things. (yes, an actual Cessna 172, he still has it) It was pretty awful to have a baby, then be dropped off at home from the hospital on his way to the airport to complete his annual inspection. (no lie, first child and no help from the significant other).

Ooh, sorry for all of the unsolicited advice! I guess I still have some unresolved issues!

lol thanks wendy. sorry my fault for refferring to her as the misses. were not actually married but together for 5 years so may as well be. the comments still apply lol. she's into those dam puzzle books and sodoku etc... how i can be a nerd i dont know!! i've exhausted all the shopping options by now so this is the current sweetner.

"if i get rid of the big one then can you leave me be with the other two" seems to be working so far lol.

Hehehehehe...

...sorry you have to get rid of a tank. I dunno how you managed it though. I gave up on keeping up with a 5g nano on top of my 55!

....and just to add my two cents, my pet hate is when you have your sleeve rolled up, arm shoulder deep in the tank, water splashed on the floor and down the front of the tank, half the plants in a bucket on the floor in front of you and they ask.... "Are you messing around in that tank again?"

i had to go shopping with her yesterday and then buy her dinner! apparently me sitting here, being in a fish shop or sorting out my tanks isn't a healthy lifestyle! massive massive arguments here

and then i tell her i've bought a tank twice the size of my current biggie and she's fine with it!
