I just got 2 Bolivian Rams yesterday. Not sure what gender they are as they are still young. I've noticed that they aren't very active is this their common behavior or what? ????

My two aren't that active either, but I think that they probably prefer to be in a group of maybe four (especially when they're young). Any one else have any comments.

I just got two myself. What other tankmates do you have them with? Mine were very active the first day as they acclimated and inserted themselves into the pecking order. Now they are very calm, they remind me of smaller versions of the Satanoperca leucosticta cichlid, right down to the sifting through the substrate behavior (hence the Genus name Mikrogeophagus I presume, note to self: add more sand to my substrate). They seem to be predominantly bottom dwellers, so if you have a lot of other bottom dwelling fish (like I do), then they may be less likely to move around. I'm no expert of course, but this is just what I've noticed. I've even seen mine 'school' with my Dwarf Rainbows. I think they will brighten up with time. What's your water quality like? Perhaps they are having a hard time adjusting to your water.

i bought a pair the weekend mine are the same, are yours motionless with their dorsal fins closed.

Bolivian Rams are not really active fish, and you won't see them swimming fast many times, but its fins should still be open most of the time. My Boliv is a wimp and likes to hide alot.

I've got 2 honey Gouramis and 3 Harlequin Rasboras with the Bolivians in a 10 gal. My ph is 7.1 and temperature is 79(Fahrenheit). Mine don't school with other fish and they don't bury into the gravel either. -_-

All of mine Bolivian Rams hold all their fins erect. :good:. And at times they stay completely motionless. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I have had two for about a month, They display at each other constantly, both males, They are about the same size and fight alot. Nothing to violent though. swim up to each other and flush their colours until one backs down, if neither backs down they go mouth to mouth. This is normal behaviour, as they both want bo be top dog (top fish anyway).

They are in the tank with.

1 Red Tailed black shark
10 lemon Tetra
4 Zebra Danio
5 Praecox Rainbow
3 Napoensis Cory

They nudge other fish at feeding time, very territorial, but are living peacefully in my community tank. as long as they have somewhere to hide.

Red Tailed black shark doesn't bother them.

i have one that sits front and centre of the tank, just ambling up and down just above the gravel, my other one spends all its time hiding, but can be see about in the tank at feeding time, and when he feels like it.
