Hi there I just have a couple of questions regarding these gorgeous little fish.

I currently have one on it's own in a tank with a few other fish but I plan on moving it into it's own tank (perhaps with a few Neon Tetra) in the next week or so and I was wondering if Rams have any prefered substrate and prefered plants? I want to try and get it as happy as possible before introducing a mate, which brings me onto my next question.

Is my Ram likely to take kindly to having another Ram placed in with it? It has been on it's own for a few months now, although there have been other fish in the tank none of them were it's own kind. She does have a habit of chasing my Black Sailfin Molly around, but in turn used to get chased by my Chinese Algae Eater (who terrorised everyone) and now by my male Colbalt Dwarf Gourami. I'm just a little worried that she'll either get bullied by a new Ram or end up being a bully.

Lastly what numbers are Rams best kept in? I've read pairs in some places and in others I've read keeping them in 3's is best, verying from 2 females and one male to 2 males and female, I can't see how the later would work myself.

Any help would be appriciated. Thank you.

Im also interested to find out what would happen if i added a femal to my male in his tank, whats the chances of finding a female in a shop? and are they likley to pair up?

Sand is the ideal substrate as they're eartheaters by nature, but I've kept German Blue Rams with gravel before with no major issues. Personally I'd go for sand anyway as IMO it looks better. I've found my rams always ignored plants, so whatever you put in there should be fine. I'd make sure there are some in there just so theres some cover in case of bullying.

As for ratio, either 1 male to 1 female or just keep one.

Rams are fairly assertive, but I've only over seen aggression towards other rams - not to most community fish so I wouldn't worry about that.

What size tank were you thinking of?

They love sand and plants. mine are in a planted tank with sand.

Yes your fish will bully any new fish BUT if you add the new fish to the new tank at the same time you add your old girl it will be less of a problem because its all new territory. I have 2 Balivians in a 36 gal The one I think is female keeps the one I know is male in his place. But they never have full on war. I also have a keyhole with them and he keyhole is the perfect tank mate for these fish IMO.

a pair would be best different sex. I had 2 male balloon rams one killed the other once matured. If you have a big tank you could keep 4 or more in a 55 gal. If any pair up they will not want the others around.
