Diesel Trout
Fish Fanatic
Imagine my surprise yesterday evening when I saw a new cluster of eggs on a smooth flat rock in a different part of my tank. Different because previously my mated ram pair laid their eggs at the opposite end of the tank on a different flat rock. And surprise because this wasn't my mated pair, it was one of their offspring, a 10 month old juvenile.
It appears that this little one hooked up with the third ram of my original three that I added to the community about a year ago. But it also appears that the eggs were not fertilized. Could the adult male just be helping out, guarding the eggs with the juvi? So far she is doing a good job of keeping the others away because the eggs are still there this evening.
Question: do fish (rams) lay eggs only when they pair up, or is it purely biological? My original pair laid eggs 4 times, but haven't done so in about 7 months.
