Hi there,

I boiled my mapani driftwood all day and the tanins are still pouring out of it, the water looks like red/brown coke a cola, should I keep boiling it? also when buying mesh for attaching moss to rocks how big should the holes be and is that the same for riccia? and can I mix aquaclay with gravel if i need a bit more volume?

Regards Darren

I had tannin leeching from Mopani wood for near 8months, so dont think one night will get rid of it lmao

Boil it more if you want. There is no set time to boil it for, it's all about if you like the colour the tannins give.
Also, when attatching moss to rocks and wood, don't buy a mesh. There is no point, just place the moss on and secure with nylon hair net and thread.
Read this and all your questions on moss and riccia should be answered.

Get some Purigen and forget those tannin tea blues. Your water will sparkle.

got to agree there m8

i had bogwood in my tank for a year and a half and the water was still turning yellow a couple days after a water change, added purgin and now the water stays crystal clear, took about 3-4 days to reach full sparkle but was worth the wait.

Cool thats an awesome tip thanks for that......and the tannins in mopani come out like a mixture of coke and blood lol in color that is lol

I agree Rob, just not this much tannins lol

if you like your water clearer than it comes out the taps, like me, you'll love purigen.

I have the same problem with my wood in my tank. What is purigen? Is it a lliquid you put into the tank? Is it safe to use if the have plants in the tank?

purigen is a powder that comes in a bag and you place it in the filter, google Seachem purigen and it will bring up more information on how it works.
It's 100% safe with plants, infact from my knowledge of stateside planted tanks about %40 use it.

I will have to use it, even though i love the color of tannins in the water my water( in a bucket with driftwood) is still becoming cokeacola) lol
