how long do u need to soak bog wood for?

and is it just in normal water?

Depends. I've soaked bogwood for weeks (2 weeks in hot water, 4 weeks in cold) and it's still leeched. If you don't mind coloured water and your kh is high, you don't need to soak it. If you have low kh, beware of a ph crash.

if u add the wood to a bucket and the water dont change colour then would it be ok to put it straight in the tank?

It's not an instant thing. It will take time for the tannin to leech into the water, so chucking it in a bucket and checking an hour later isn't going to help. If you want to do it properly and the bogwood hasn't been presoaked, expect to wait weeks for it to finish. But like I said, if your KH is reasonable and you don't mind the colour, you don't need to soak it.
