Hey guys,

Just a bit of a question really, about a year ago i took quite a large piece of bogwood out of my tank. I remember that this particular piece used to sometimes smell and seemed to be falling apart when i handled it. Anyway i allowed the wood to dry and stored it as it seemed not to smell when dry. Anyway to try and lower my ph a bit i thought i would put it back in the tank. so i started to soak it. Once i started to soak it within minutes it started to smell again, is there anything i can do to prevent this? Anyhelp would be much appreciated.

I'd say it's rotting, probably from the inside out. What kind of wood is it, and what does it smell like?

Not too sure on what type of wood it is, will a picture help? Its hard to describe it smells kind of drain like if that makes sense?

If I'm getting it, that sounds like rotting food, so rotting log. I'd probably take it out.

I know that this may sound like a bit of a stupid question but does all bogwood rot after a while? As ive had some in my tank for years that is fine. should i try boiling the bogwood to see if that fixes it?

Boiling it will break down the fibers and then it will rot for sure. I think it's just time to retire it. And no, not all wood rots being in the water. It just depends on the species. Hardwoods rot the least.

Cheers for the help guys, the wood is now enjoying retirement in the bin :)
