Is it just this easy, because nothing in Fish keeping is easy im probably wrong.

Find Wood Which Is not newly Cut so not green
Boil and clean it,
Soak For a week or two or untill it sinks.
Boil again.
Add to tank?

Tortea?

That would work, but there are some pieces of wood that you do not want in your tank, like ones that may have sap.

But all Wood has sap, do you only mean fresh sap?

There are some kinds of wood you should stay away from, not sure which kinds though.

I would try to find some wood that is already in some sort of water, like a stream, lake or something? That way it is already water logged, and most likely free of other stuff.

But you still have to boil it.

Really, it's best to stick with wood from your LFS. That way you know it's safe for use. To use wood found in your backyard or elsewhere you would have to know exactly what kind of wood it is, and then adjust your preperation to fit.

I'm not sure on the proper procedure for this, so hopefully a member who knows for sure will come along and comment.

But surely i can do it cheaper than the £20 stuff from the LFS

Somehow my reply to this the other day didn't post so I'm going to try and piece it back together. I feel the need for the wood to be really dried out (from previous sap etc) by nature and to be able to sink if possible are things that make finding the right stuff harder than what you describe. Over the years people have figured out what works and that's why you see certain types discussed so much if you do searches. Here's a good post:
