I bought a couple of pieces of bogwoo and I have 'em soaking in a bucket. I have been emptying the bucket out and putting new water nack in daily. I've been doing this to get the tannins out. If I keep this up, the brown stuff will eventually go away, rght? How long?

Bogwood is a nightmare to get right! I kept mine in a bucket and filled it with boiling water every day and let it soak. it took about 2 weeks for the water to get absolutely clear, but it's worth doing that rather than upsetting your tank water.

i soaked mine for weeks and it still leeches a bit after 2 months

What ARE the different types of woods used and their pros and cons? Do some of them do less tannin leaching? Do they have to be attached to slate bases? .. time for some bogwood wisdom from the water artists, hay, hay!

it can vary massivley from one piece of wood to another so you'll never get a hard and fast answer.

if you get mopani this generally needs v little soaking, if you use other wood it generally takes longer.

you do occasionally get some that carries on leaching tannines it seems indefinatley. i had one piece a while back that just leeched it constantly, have several stints of soaking it, each time giving up after 2/3 months when it just wouldn't stop leeching, tried boiling it and all sorts. Just gave up on it in the end. :dunno:

i use mango wood, it doesnt leak tannins but it does need to be wedged or weighted down. :good:

Some fish prefer the water to have a bit of a tint to it, South American fish tend to like it as the stained water reflects the natural habitat for them, bear this in mind.

Gosh...I thought this was gonna be an easy process.

to be perfectly honest a little brown in the water is no bad thing, in my opinion .

as long as the water checks out good, and is clear , it doesent bother me too much at all.
