If bogwood (or any wood that releases tannins into the water) has been soaked / boiled and no longer discolours the water, does the wood continue to alter water chemistry (i.e. lower the pH)? Not sure if that makes sense, so in a nutshell: If tannins aren't visible in the water, does the wood essentially become intert?

the ph lowering effect of bogwood does wear off, however i'm not sure if this is related to it leeching tannine's into the water, they may happen on a different timescale

wondered this myself as iv had pre soaked bog wood in mines for over 4 months now and it still releases tannins , after a week the waters always yellow , the difference after a 50% water change is great, i just wish it would stay that way , the ph always hangs about 6.4 which i don't mind as all the fish i have do better and those conditions ..

Thanks.

I'm currently soaking a huge piece of mangrove root in a dustbin at the moment, preparing to transfer it into my brackish tank. The last thing I want to do is dramatically lower the pH.

I have alot of malasian bog wood in my tank, I havnt had a problem with PH in my tank yet. Maybe just the type of wood? I do have lots of problems with tannins in the water though  to be honest no matter how long I have soked or boiled wood I still have a problem with tannins in my water, maybe im doing it wrong  But I have never had problems with Ph.

if your Ph is staying stable you must have a good kh value in your water :)
