I have one piece of bogwood in my tank, which i boiled for about an hour and is still leaching tannins into the water, a few months after i put it in.

then my auntie gave me a piece about a month ago which i soaked for a while in cold water, but dont want to put it in my tank cause it will go brown. (it doesnt fit in a pan)

and then i have a smaller piece which i have boiled for about 2 hours and is STILL giving off the horrible brown stuff.

just wondering how long it usually takes to get rid of it, as it is horrible in tanks and i dont want to look at it :)

thanks

some people soak bogwood forupto 6 weeks to get rid of the tannings a good boil for a few hours doesn;t do it , it takes time
the only other thing i can suggest is put them in your tanks and run carbon in your filters this will remove the tannings while the bogwood soaks

time of soaking is the key , i always buy presaoked planted bogwood from pets at home now but in the past i have just run the carbon - after 3 weeks of soaking and still tannings

took me 10 mins in boiling water and i had no tanning

i guess it depends on the wood

I had one piece of bogwood which was boiled for hours every day for about a week, still gave off tannins once in the tank but I had three filters running with charcoal for a while, so I could see the fish and not suck them up syphoning...
I can still see a bit of yellow in the water now at the end of the week a year and a half later, but that's because my little dwarf plec eats wood and releases it.
Luckily, the fish I have in that tank like soft, acidic water with tannins - do yours?

My parents have an enormous stew-pot - I was able to repeatedly boil first one end and then the other on my problem piece of wood, due to the shape: if you know anyone who goes 'garage-sale-ing', can you get them to keep a watch out for old, really, really big metal pots going cheap?
Even if one or more pieces of bogwood won't fit, it'll come in handy for others.

as stated a carbon filled filter will remove the tannins fast enough. but if you are worried about the health of your fish, don't be. there is plenty of evedence that tannins don't harm fish. indeed it quite possible that they will like them!

Once its boiled off the nasties, bung it in the tank and do water changes to dilute the tannins
Some fish thrive in tannins anyway, so its not bad for the fish, its only bad for aesthetics really
