I have started up a 55 gallon tank with boesmani rainbow fish and wanted to add a small schooling fish with them, such as rummy nose or neon tetras. At the moment my rainbows are small but obviously they will grow, could there be a long lasting friendship there or would it end up in disaster down the track?

It should work. I had mine with silvertips and there were never any disasters. I'd go for a fairly brave, fast moving tetra though because rainbows can be quite chasey.

You shouldnt have a problem - ive kept my rainbow fish with neons, cardinals, serpae, black phantoms and penguins with no problems. As long as you have a few rainbows they chase amongst themselves.

If you are worried about the neons, get cardinals. They grow slightly bigger.
