I found this plant while doing some research last night, got a bit excited and bought one from an eBay seller. Now I'm reading that it's not so easy to care for. Hm.

I am just wondering what substrate is suitable? I have black sand, but I am willing to add something more nutrient rich on top.

Btw, I'm very very new to fish keeping and aquatic plants x)

I want to get some blyxa Japonica myself sometime, it looks nice. I recon you will be fine with this plant as long as you dose fertilisers. A nutrient rich substrate isn't essential but wouldn't hurt either. If you do go for the nutrient rich substrate you will still need to dose fertilisers because the nutrients will eventually run out and then you will run into problems!
Some people use clay based substrates that don't have much nutrients in it but will soak up nutrients from the water for the plants. I just use regular gravel without any problems. I want to try one of the clay based substrates but it means ripping everything out and starting again, possibly one day I might

Try using a substrate of

1.5 inches clay under 1 inch sand and -.25 inches gravel.
or you can skip the gravel part.
It is cheaper than using "designer" substrate

Thank you for the advice guys. I will give the clay a try.

Pictures will be up when I get the blyxa planted :)
