Just popped into my more exotic lfs- and they had a beautiful shoal of blue tetras. Never seen these guys before, believe they must be the ones known as Cochu's blue tetra. They were gorgeous. From googling I have gathered that they get to about 2 inches, and behave pretty well like other tetras (shoal, soft/acidic to neutral water, omnivores, are considered quite sensitive to water changes).
Does anyone have any personal experience? And a picture?
I really can't buy them, because we had agreed to get a pair of dwarf gouramis after the summer- but I do want them!

wow they are really gorgeous, I don't have any experience with them but here are some pics I found

pic 1, pic 2, pic 3

not much info though, now you got me hooked with these (I might consider them when I upgrade to a bigger tank :p )

Oh, thank you, shuhu, what lovely pictures! Those are the guys- you can see why I want them! But I definitely have not got room for both those and the gouramis in my 70 ltrs (5 corys already in there)- besides, the 70 ltrs is a high, so have a feeling they wouldn't have enough swimming room. And I've never seen the tetras before, they may not be there later.
If only I could persuade my husband that we need another tank- he thinks we need totally unnecessary items like beds and tables instead! Imagine an Amazonian set-up with these and some green swordtails and maybe a pair of bristlenoses, it would be gorgeous!

yea, I know how it feels  I've made a list of the fish I like the most (that are compatible) but still have to decide which ones I will get in the future for my next tank

I haven't seen the Blue Tetras before either and it might be better to wait for the gouramis, since these are more commonly sold at LFS, and consider also that you might have to get at least 4 of them since I bet they are the schooling type.

hi there, im new to this froum.
my girlfriend has a tropiquarium 55. with 5 of these "Blue Tetras" they were sold to us as King Blue Tetras.
if they are the same fish, they are very nice to watch when shoaling, always somthing to watch( but in a busy tank there always something to watch anyway)
this is the only shoaling fish she has so i can't say they are fin nippers.
we brought them for £6 for 5 fish.
all i need to say now is they Very nice fish
happy fishkeeping

There is an article on blue emperor tetras in this months (April) PFK. Not sure if these are the same thing

Gordon

not the same as blue emperors.

I read somewhere only yesterday (may have been that PFK actually) that they can be nippy

Since I started this thread 2 years ago, I've been reading up on cochu's and hanging around fish shops looking at their behaviour, and as far as I can make out they are nippy. They also grow quite fat, their movements do not match the elegance of their colouring.

No experience with them myself but my LFS also has them and I think they are gorgeous, we're planning on getting them in a few weeks. Unfortunatley the tank that my LFS stocks them in seems to end up with a lot dead (I don't mean just one first thing in the morning or something like that - that would be understandable. I mean literally about 10 or so dead ones in a tank) and so we're not buying them just yet until that's settled down.

And no, the blue Kings and Emporers are not the same thing - though also attractive, the plain old Blues are so gorgeous.

We bought ten from Trimar last year. We have three left. Not recommended at all. I doubt it was Trimar's fault, all our other fish have been perfect from there - this is a species thing no doubt. And they're not as pretty as Google shows, in fact, I read somewhere that they might even be dyed?

which blue tetras are you wanting to know about, there are at least 3 species sold as 'blue tetra'.

I really wish more people would use scinetific names where possible.
not a dig at anyone but an observation about how common names are meaningless sometimes.

Note that this thread is 2 years old (and I did say I was talking about cochu's).
