I was in a LFS today just browsing (as I am wont to do...) and I found myself looking at the cichlids, something I'd never done before. I'd always assumed they were too aggressive and difficult to care for for a beginner such as myself. They were all so beautiful and colorful, and I found myself daydreaming of a nice cichlid tank sometime down the road. When approached by a shop attendant, she asked what sort of set up I had and I told her. She suggested a "center piece" fish and pointed me to a fish called a blue ram. There were three of them in a tank with MOLLIES! I never dreamed that a peaceful "community" tank could include a cichlid species, but she said it was absolutely possible. Not knowing about them, I passed on them today but decided I would do some research about their general care and temperament and may go that route in the future. They were certainly lovely. After researching them a bit, I find that I have the right pH to keep them, but not the proper aquascaping. One day, though, I think I might upgrade to a 55 gallon and would consider keeping cichlids. How difficult are they to care for, truly?

good move, they're a very popular fish to keep but because of their requirements usually don't make it past 6 months. however with proper care they will thrive.

other similar species to check out would be the bolivian ram, mikrogeophagus altispinosa (a very hardy fish)
aswell as one of the many aspistogramma species.

As lovely as they were, I'm glad I passed on them. In the future, I'd definitely like to try some mikrogeophagus altispinosa, they're stunning! Thank you for suggesting them :)
