Ok here is what has happened:

I bought 2 Blue rams, a few weeks ago and could not tell if they where male or female. Not showing much colour I had a funny feeling i had got 2 females.( these I know belive are the long finned type. )

So today while browsing for some plants i noticed a tank with Blue Rams in it and, you could tell a mile off what the sexes where, so i bought a male.

Not long after putting the new male into the tank ( a normal finned varity ). The other 2 rams have shown there true colours i belive and they are males. Now they are handing the pecking order down to the new fish.

Whats my best option in dealing with this leave them to it or seperate them?

at first my two did that. but now i havnt seen them do it in a while. i dont know what sex mine are but i think they are females. i would probably just leave them for a while and if it continues i would seperate them. they are beatiful fish tho arent they?

i've always wondered, would females act as aggressively if they were in a group of three, all being female, the same way that a group of 3 males would?

I wonder the same thing. Something similar happened to me, I got two I thought to be a pair, then thought they were both males, so got two females to make two pairs, and now I am not sure what the original two are, because one of them and one of the new females are keeping separate territories in the tank and headbutting when they run into each other. Also driving the other two away whenever they enroach...

you can add some dither or target fish to take off the aggression. also rearranging the tank so all the inhabitants will have to reestablish territories helps when adding a new cichlid to an established tank. keeping the lights off for a few days will also help.
