i just bought 2 blue rams for my 45 gallon tank, and they went straight to hiding. will they ever come out of hiding? there are no other fish in the tank anymore accept them.

You say you've just bought them? In that case, give them a few days to settle down, they can be rather shy at first

P.T.

Yah fish tend to do that. I just got two firemouths today and they hide for about 6 hours. lol. Most of the time they usually do though.

:hi:

i suggest you turn the tank lights off so they get used to the tank.what other tank mates do you have them with?

DD

there arn't any fish in the tank accept them. any suggestions on good tankmates? and when should i first feed the blue rams? are they they same as any other fish with eating habbits?

Some good tankmates for blue rams are small, peaceful tetras such as neons, cardinals, etc. In the wild rams rely on these fish as sort of an early warning, if they see them swimming around happily they will know that there is no dangers around, however, if they are darting about in hiding spots the rams know danger is lurking and to be careful  smart fish

when should i first feed the blue rams?

Try feeding them tonight  if you have any live or frozen foods try that just to make sure they're feeding alright, after that you could start to get them eating flakes, or whatever you choose to feed them.

are they they same as any other fish with eating habbits?

Rams will eat anything and everything, so don't be worried

is it typical for them to sit at the bottom for a long time? i didnt think they would sit for this long its been like 9 hours and they dont really move, and the end of their dorsal fins are spazen out...

This is normal. I agree with the other posts, having other fish, especially tetras swimming about will make them feel more comfortable. Pencilfish are another option. Interesting little fish that go well with rams. I also agree with keeping the lights off for a bit, that will help them feel more comfortable too. Having hiding spots is important for these fish, at first they will stay hidden but after a while they will feel a bit more adventurous knowing that they have a safe place to retreat to. Rams will tend to spend most of their time near the bottom. They probably won't eat well for a couple days, try frozen brine shrimp, they'll have a hard time passing that up! Just give them some time to get used to their surroundings. Good luck!

thanks guys i really apreciate it for making me feel better. one more thing, whats up with the fish when they put the food into their mouth, but just spit it back out in 5 seconds?

I think they do that to make it break in to smaller pieces so it is easier for them to swallow.

the spitting of food is a pretty normal cichlid trait. As stated before, the rams will be a lot more comfortable with some dither fish. As for feeding, they should accept almost any food. Mine will now even come to the surface to eat if I feed them flakes. Great fish though, you should enjoy them.
