Well I've been thinking about getting a betta for a while but only a small 5G tank from home bargains with a small filter and heater.

Then the staff at work said they no longer wanted the goldfish at Nursery so one of the Staff took the 2 Goldy's home into a 40G tank which will make a much better home. So i took the filthy 10G tank home and started cleaning it ready for a fishless cycle. Then nipped to my LFS for some new gravel and a plant. Bought myself some black gravel (5KG) and a nice artificial plant :D

So poured the water in and added the ammonia, then came on here and found that i need a heater. So then couple of days later i tested my levels and they were still 8ppm+ so thought that i need a new filter. so quick trip onto eBay got myself a Fluval 2+ and an Interpet 50W Heater.

Well the heater arrived today but i haven't put it in the tank yet, so tested my levels today and they are now at 0.25 - 0.50 ppm yipee. so added some ammonia again now just a waiting game.

Now just waiting on new filter to transfer media over get it set then off to buy a stunning Betta.

Sounds brilliant! Sounds like your betta will be going to a nice new home :good:

Sounds good mate looking forward to the pictures when you get up and running.

Well my filter came tonight looks like its got some sort of solid 'pale pink' algae/coral on it, will this affect my tank at all?

any way i set it up tonight so its now heated and on full power filtration. fingers crossed it'll be ready when i come back of my holiday on 20th ready for fish.

Here it is...

What a pretty tank :3 I love it I really don't know about the algae/coral, maybe best get rid of it by either leaving the tank in the dark, or using algae-cide. Some people cycle tanks with ammonia in the dark in fear of algae blooms

Well got back off holiday yesterday and its ready but sadly i wont be back home for another week due to university work so i'll have a good look at fish on friday :D

Are there any tips when trying to find a nice healthy betta?

Take your time observing them, and don't buy the 1st one you find.

Don't let a little fin damage put you off a nice Betta, just be sure theres no black edging of signs of finrot and it will heal in no time :)

Look for a healthy, active Betta, but not a super aggressive 1 (if your planning tank mates, sorry only had a quick skim through)

I have plenty of practice  am often staring at 1 betta for 10-20mins at a time :look: especially those more needy than others

Cost me £4.95 and was really torn as the ones they had in this time were all Beautiful undamaged examples

So i got him home and plonked him in the tank (plonked = 1.5hr rehab time)

then once fully out of the bag he flew off and hid under the filter :( so turned off the light on the tank and closed my blinds in the room. he then started to come out but every time i went near the tank or tried switching on the light he would go hide again. so i gave up and went to bed but turned the blue light on....

Ta Daa he came out so i dropped a couple of pellets in and he had a nibble.

He's still very shy but is coming out front when the light is on and he's eating food ok. So im hoping he'll become much more vigilant but at least he's using the whole 10G tank (Spoilt Brat)
