Here's my new babies  They are meant to be a pair of blue acaras but only time will tell if they will actually pair up and if the female is really a female. They have a 55 gallon all to themselves. I'm really looking forward to watching them grow up. I've tried keeping kribs (too aggressive for the tank I had set up at the time), rams (someday I'll try another pair) and jewel cichlids (a pair of fish I really miss and hope to own again one day) before and was really sad to have to give them up. This time these guys are in the right size tank with it all to themselves so I don't think I'll encounter too many problems. I'm planning on getting more into cichlids.

About the stripes on the female I believe those are because she's stressed? The male also was very striped like that yesterday but today his stripes have faded away. Even less striped than when I took the pictures earlier today. I hope the female settles in soon. At the moment she reminds me of a convict.

One thing about the male I am a little unsure about is I noticed his left fin is deformed :X It looks as they he must of been in a fight sometime in his life and maybe another fish pulled it out of joint and now it just kind of folds downwards. He is still able to swim around just fine and you can't notice it much. I've been trying to convince myself he's kinda like Nemo and needs love too but to be honest if I would of noticed it at the shop I think I would of chosen another male. I think it would be too much of a hassle to return him for another male though as the shop is 45 mins away.

Anyways on to the pictures.... here's where they are living

edit: I switched the background on the tank this afternoon to black so I just wanted to put a picture up of how the tank looks now. Oh and in this pic you can see the little girl towards the bottom on the right.

Beautiful , the bars will come and go , you're going to like these ;)

Thanks Joe!! I already like them :) They have been following me around today as I've been moving about..similar to what you were saying about your severums following you around like little puppies :p

the Jewels didn't do that ?

New word cichlids are a very interesting and interested [ in what your are doing in the room and not feeding them ] fish ............so are many other perch type fish

If you have a bonded pair they may breed right in front of you , mine did . ;)

very nice tank, looks so nice and bright, nice w/ those fake plants that have no algea on them, hope you can find a way to keep them that way. I'm sure you'll love your acaras, watch out though cichlids are quite addictive.

Joe I don't think the jewels had time to like me. They spawned almost as soon as I brought them home and both were trying to protect their fry from me. The male would pace about the glass when I came over and when I had to do a water change it was biting time :sly:

Oneday though I will get another pair because I think they are stunning fish too :)

Phillip Thanks for the nice comments! I don't know if you saw my other post in the new world cichlid section but I was saying in that post how I had snails in the tank and they kept/keep all of my tanks spotless of algae but as soon as I put the Acaras in by the next morning all the snails were gone except for a couple bigger ones and even those will be come lunch soon I think. I didn't mind they ate them but now thinking about it I'm a bit worried about algae coming.
