I have a few question concerning my aquarium containing two Blue Acaras that I bought three days ago.

A week ago I set up my 38 gallon/150L tank and bought two Blue Acaras. When I got home from the LFS I realized that the small Acara had frayed fins. Her dorsal, caudal and pectoral fins are all frayed. This made me think she may have fin rot, so i went out last night and bought some Melafix and Primafix and treated the aquarium as directed by the bottle.

Stats:

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0
Ph - 7.6
Temp - 27C

Now for the questions

Will treating the tank with Melafix and Primafix harm the batch of eggs?

Also, not sure if you can make it out in the picture but does she have fin rot?

I can post more Pictures if needed

Thanks!!!

Hard to tell from the picture. Might have just gotten fin nipped. I don't think the meds will hurt the eggs, but is this a brand new tank? Any mature filter media? Make sure you keep up on water changes to help heal the fins.

The tank isn't new, I have been keeping different fish for a few years now. I had a long battle with Itch and tiger barbs recently and all was lost, so I cleaned everything out and filled the tank a week ago. It's a fresh cycle so I have been testing the water every 12 hours and it seems like I'm changing 20% of the water every 2 to 3 days to keep ammonia real close to 0 if not 0.

Right now my stats are:

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Ni rate 0
PH 7.6
Temp 27

The female's fins don't seem to be getting worse at all, since Sunday. I'm just a little worried about cycling, raising fry and maybe treating for Itch all at the same time..

Any Tips?

Thanks

treat with melafix to avoid infection, 20% waterchange every few days is great! i wouldn't worry about the eggs (if they are affected then there will be more eggs in 2 weeks time anyway)

Itch? I'm assuming you mean Ich? There's a chance the fry might not make it through this whole ordeal just with cycling and all (if you treated for Ich correctly you should be fine.) Best to do daily water changes if the tank is cycling. As above said, Mela won't harm anything, but knocking out frequent water changes is your safest method (and some even say Melafix doesn't do a thing.)

Yea I meant Ich, but the spell check corrected it to Itch. I'm not sure why I wrote that I was treating for ich......lol wow.. I meant fin rot, but I'm beginning to think that its not fin rot and its just nipped fins. My previous setup had ich, not my current one. I probably will start doing smaller daily water changes so the female's fins repair alittle faster. :)

I'll keep you guys posted on whether the eggs hatch, should be tomorrow sometime. Both acaras are looking really good, really dark. I'm also going to try and get a few clearer pictures today to post up. :)

and thanks for your help!!!! :)

Oh and just a quick question: Assuming that the eggs do hatch, will the fry eat frozen brine shrimp?

Thanks

Do you have Ich? Are your fish Flashing? Do you see white spots? Don't treat for it unless you have it.

Don't worry about the fins. They got nipped during the spawing the male and female can get rough and even fight when they are getting ready to spawn. Mine do all the time they are crazy. DON'T use treatments unless you have too. for ripped fins don't add anything just do more water changes and they will heal very fast on their own.

Over medicating fish will shorten the life spane of the fish over time and will cause more damage then good.

Your fish get her fins ripped during breeding nothing to freak out about.
