Blue Acara An Parrot Breeding!

just watched the video, it really isnt worth all the hassle of uploadin it, just not good quality. had to use my phone, gonna go an get the video cam now, see if that works

yeah, just caught about 40 of them to put in my 40gal shrimp tank. Gonna grow them out now as the guy who owns my LFS I like to use is gonna take them when their older.

Another irresponsible fish shop profiteering with hybrid fish that should not be distributed imo.

Thats fair enough but what should you do with the fry then???????

Ray
I think they should be culled, or used as food for other fish. I know its a very touchy issue, but my opinion is that hybrids should not be passed around. That is my opinion and I don't want top cause offence to Parrot and other hybrid owners and I respect their right to keep them. Look how the parrot has been so abused by people trying to make a fast buck.

This was not planned, an i doubt anyone is gonna make that much money. Feeding them to other fish is just as big an issue if u ask me, not natural to feed live fish to other fish in a little glass container, an I certainly wouldnt intentionally cull them if they could lead a perfectly healthy life. As i said, this was by accident an the likelyhood is there wont be many broods before i can split them up.

I can see both sides. I dont think you should put them back into the hobby though. I have bred many hybrids but either kept them or gave them to trusted friends. Giving them to a fish shop is not a very good idea.

Kinda what I was trying to say, only you made more sense ~T~.

knish, I understand people not wanting to use them as food, I was just saying what I would do.

Added a better light to the tank an the photos came out better, now this stocking isnt great, bought these when they were very young hoping to get a false GT, I think i have suceeded and the other GT is going back to a good home now.

The doting mother, Blue Acara? She is probably gonna have to go back now due to the unfortunate breeding.

This is the fish i bought as a GT, female i think and also probably gonna go back. This seems to be pairing off with the fish in the third photo, I am hoping is a false GT. U can just see the Anostonus there too

Bought this as a Blue Acara when quite small, it already looked like a false Gt to me and has a definate bump now, what do you think?

Picture of the possible hybrid, any thoughts?

The tank is gonna be upgraded to a 180gal 6x2x2 at least, poss a 7x2x2 and the residants will be;

1xBP
1xSenegal Bichiir
1xStriped Anostonus
1xL201
1xElectric Blue JD
1xRed Shoulder Severum
any 2 of the 3 above fish, probably just the false GT tho, if thats what it is.

Anyone any ideas on anything else that may go well in the new tank once it comes? Oh and of course the I.D of the above if you can?

As for the fry, it looks like none of the ones transported have survived and there arent many left in the big tank. I am gonna leave any others in the big tank and if they survive they deserve to be around. Only really moved them because of the aggression but it seems under control for now, untill I can seperate them all.

Thanks in advance, Vinny

Iam hopeless with id'ing fish, but I would definately say that is not a pure Blue Acara, I have 3 BA's and the only part that looks like mine slightly is the face, with the blue markings, otherwise Id go with nelly's thought on a cross with a convict!!!

Yeah, i am coming round to this way of thinking, it just seems a slightly different shape to both Convicts, or Acaras. Anyone anymore ideas?

That is a very odd looking acara, it really does look like it has been crossed wth a convict.

I'll take it if you are in the UK and a are willing to post (I can send you what you would need).

Actually no I would still say its pure, it would appear that blue acaras become striped when in breeding mode.

Could the acara have bred with the GT and not the parrot as thats a much more logical explaination.

Thanks T, much better pics in a different thread there m8, changed the light on the tank. Apparently it is a pure Acara, which is good, but also slightly strange, didnt think they would breed with a Parrot. He is gonna be moved to my 62gal soon to harrass my Tiger barbs.

If any of these fry do survive, (havent seen ANY from the ones moved to my shrimp tank, in days) I will certainly send you some of them. Not sure if any will survive now though, hope a few do.

As for the breeding, it is definately the Parrot, both spend time fanning the eggs and take turn to piece defending the fry and eggs. Any time the GT has a little go at the Acara too, the Parrot sees it off, quite sweet really, but a good reminder for me to hurry up an sort this 180gal out.

Plus, My false Gt has started breeding behaviour with my normal female GT. The female will be going back before they take this any further.
