Today was treat day for my fishy friends and I gave them some live bloodworms, which I have to say didn't stay live for long, all my fish went mental for them and they were gone very quickly. This is only the second time I have given them bloodworms and both times they were live. Are the freeze dried ones as good for the fish, or is it better to use live?

I cannot find anywhere that sells the live bloodworm so I always buy the frozen stuff.

I went to my local Maidenhead aquatics today and they had a whole selection of live food on their counter in little sealed bags, just drained the water away they came in so it didn't effect my tank in any way and popped them in, within a couple of minutes they had all been eaten. I just didn't know if there was any benefit to live ones, is any nutritional content lost in the freeze drying process?.

It is possible to introduce parasites with live food - best to feed frozen live foods where this is not a risk. Freeze dried foods can cause bloat as they re-hydrate and swell up in the fishes body so its best to pre-soak any and all freeze dried foods, to reconstitute them before feeding to your fish.

If you have a fussy eater live food can sometimes provoke a feeding response, some essential amino acids are neutralised by freezing but if you feed a varied diet this shouldn`t matter

I use frozen and freeze dried. At first they weren't very keen on the freeze dried, they definateley love frozen foods though.
I have discus and knifefish, and i like frozen because it means i can hand feed them

Just give your fish a variety there are many different frozen foods and freeze dried, their favourite is frozen bloodworm..

I found a great value place in Peterborough to get live food "the barn garden centre" as they sell it for 45p a bag and it varies as to what food they have in so you can't guarantee the day to day stock. So it makes it a nice cheap option to feed them live food.
