Bleeding Filters!

Well i bought a boyu external filter (has i was waiting on a replacement eheim filter to come), connected it up on Monday,Adolfoi corys went in later that day, only to find the eheim turned up an hour later

6am this morning checked the fish before work to find the boyu had packed up and the corys looking bit subdued,checked the water,nitrite had gone up to 1ppm!!

Immediate w/c was done,followed by replacing the boyu with the eheim liberty filter! then rushed off to do a 7 hr shift!

Well hacked off !!

I think i'm back on top of it now,just checked,just a tad of nitrite now,so another w/c done!

So much for new filters ehh!!

There's me trying to breed these,then this happens Grrr!!!

odd that the nitrite spiked if the filter died. I would've thought an ammonia spike more likely because the ammonia processing bacteria would not be getting their food/oxygen.

Thats what i would've thought too...but ammonia was 0

The filter was quite slow on the outlet anyway compared to my other big externals,so unsure when it gave up the ghost,has i cant remember checking the actual filter flow yesterday morning,but i did test the water ammonia/nitrite was both 0.

I just hope the mature filter media catches up in the new eheim liberty hob...

I've found from seeding new filters that nitrite is always the one to watch out for, the ammonia crunching bacteria are usually far more ....whats the word... "hardy" i guess.
