Hi all :)

I've been reading up on how to improve the condition of my plants and as such have ended up having the inevitable algae diagnosis. I think I understand the reasoning behind me needing to up the amount of nutrients I add on a weekly/twice weekly basis but I wanted to be sure and read through the algae pages recommended in the basics thread. I now think it's blue green algae - it's slimey and dark and spreads in a thick mat over the gravel, leaves and other decor. So, I've started a 4 day blackout, I'm assuming my plants will be alright during this time?

Also, I have Seachem Flourish and a Rio 240. Is a single capfull needed once or twice per week? Is there any reason why I'd need to overdose this? I have 4 kinds of plants, don't know what they're called except for some water lettuce and a valis (which hasn't grown at all since planting). I can take pictures if needs but my point is that it's not very heavily planted yet so will a single cap be sufficient?

Would increasing the number/density of plants mean I'd be less likely to have the algae return once it's gone? From my understanding blue green algae is caused by/more likely to occur in tanks with low nitrates, so as mine are relatively low (<5ppm) does that mean it's likely to return if I don't control other factors?

Sorry if these are silly questions! Thanks!

When you say you have 4 kinds of plants, do you mean only 4 individual plants? Or a few plants of which is composed of 4 species? Photo would be useful.
How much light do you have? Does it have the high-light t5s?
Plants will be fine during the black out.
More plants will help against algae.
This link should answer the rest of your questions.

4 species. Around 15 water lettuce, 2 vallis, 3 that have broader leaves and then probably about 10-12 of another kind which has long thin leaves off a main stem - these are doing really well. Will find the pictures from when I bought them. Have 2 T8s at 38w and 40w which is just over 1WPG I think.

Will look at link now ta :good:

Ok.
This is personally what I would do...

Get a few more plants, like Hygrophila, Ludwigia, hornwort etc.
Get some Tropica Plant Nutrition+. Dose 12ml 2x a week.
Carry out a 10% water change per week followed by one of your tropica fert doses.
Only have the lights on for 7hours a day.
Dont worry about any carbon addition.
Make sure the filter isnt clogged up with organic waste/debris. This could leave undetectable levels of ammonia that trigger algae.
Also make sure the top of the gravel doesnt collect waste. No need to dig into the gravel, just hoover over the top.

Can't find the pictures I must have deleted them. Is there anywhere you recommend buying plants from online? LFS have very limited stock.

Thanks :) I'll try to find the funds for some more plants as a matter of urgency.

Once the blackout is complete do I need to scrub anything or will the algae have just cleared up by itself?
