One of my black widow tetras has something coming out of his anus. I noticed it last night, it wasn't there the day before. It is about protruding about 3mm and is 1 mm diameter. It is white/translucent with a pinkish centre.

Could it be some type of worm? Parasite? He is feeding and behaving normally apart from this and does not look thin. He is 2 years old, so would hate to lose him now. There is nothing apparent in my fish books.

is it there permanently or is he pooing it?

Sounds like one i''m afraid, check the anus of the fish does it look enlarged and red and inflamed that a sign of parasites as well.

The protruding part had disappeared when I got home from work yesterday, although there remained a slight pink colouration to the anus. Nothing else appeared before going to bed last night.

I have put in a mild dose of EHSA 2000 and my plan is to wait and see what happens. He is still eating well and shows no odd signs of behaviour.

Thanks for that, although it looks pretty dire. Straight down to the LFS tomorrow, see if he can give me something to treat them with.
