Has anyone else used the Trilcot black gravel described in the post linked below?
Seems like a good price £14.50 for 20Kg
I'm after getting some naturally black gravel rather than coated or painted stuff, the stuff linked below is spent glass and seems like a good deal.
Not sure how good it would look as it appears shiny.
What are your experiences with black gravel?

Looks a bit sharp to me (from that photo, anyway); not sure I'd risk it with my fish.

Hi,

I have used the same stuff in my tank and all my fish are fine and they include some Kuhli Loach and Corydoras. Although I will say that it does seem to have a green tinge to it and not jet black as the photo would suggest.

Hope this helps,

Richard

That looks alot like tahitian moon sand to me, im not sure but tahitian moon looks pretty cool. It might be a bit finer then that stuff though.

Hi Wipeout,

Please find following photo of substrate and my bamboo shrimp. Quality is not fantastic but you can see the green tinge I was talking about.

Thanks, nice shot.

Does it show up the muck sitting on the surface or does it settle between it like normal gravel? Also what's it like to clean using a syphon gravel cleaner?

Cheers

Hi,

I havent noticed that much muck, but little bits of plants do show up. Gravel cleaning is ok too I use one of the hagen battery powered cleaners and it may suck up a little of the gravel if I linger too long over a certain spot or stick the end too far into the gravel but generally it is quite good.

Richard, couple of final question.
What size tank do you have and how much gravel did you need?
I have a 3' tank, and was guessing a 20-25 Kg bag would do, to give about 1 1/2" depth.

Cheers

ps. don't suppose you have a longer/wider photo of the tank?

Hi Mate,

My Tank is 3' too and I think it was a 25kg bag that I got too. That should do you nicely. Here is a picture of the tank as it stands now. I dont have any problems with plants rooting, In fact I can honetsly say that the roots go absolutely everywhere. Like to see some pic's when you have done the tank.

Cheers for the fast response.

Your tank looks good!!

Hopefully mine will have an overhaul soon, i have relatives that live near the shop in Boston that sell's that gravel, they will grab me some when i'm ready.
Was 25kg enough to give you good depth, i think the standard bags they sell are 20Kg, but the guy said they can do me 25 if needed.

Thanks again.
