Hello everyone.

I have this black sword tail fish (female) and was wondering what the heck is the stuff hanging out of her anus? I do not know much about fish, as I am fairly new to the hobby. I noticed it just today when I went to feed the fish.

There are no male black sword tails in the tank, and the temperature of the water is kept around 75 degrees Fahrenheit if that helps.

I also am having trouble uploading a picture of the fish, it is 1.23MB and the attachments section says
"413 Request Entity Too Large" ... Can someone help?

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, I do know for a fact that it is not poo, because its like a red bulgy thing... I will try to post the picture again

a prolapse maybe?

""edit""

use something like photobucket to upload your pictures to, then just copy them here using the "img" links

The weirdest thing just happened... it just fell off!

It looks like guts but the fish isn't dead!

I guess I don't need to upload the picture anymore...

Thanks for your help though djultimate and razer121

Could it be a stillborn baby? Swordtails are livebearers, i.e. the give birth to (usually) live young.

Thats really weird because I had 2 male black swordtails, and one of them had exactly the same
hanging from its anus. Looked like part of its intestine.
But it also dropped off, and 6 weeks later he is still swimming happily around as though
nothing happened.
This occurred shortly after I got it from the LFS - maybe something odd to do with rehoming them
in a new tank.

sadly it was the other swordtail that disappeared while I was away for a week - never did find it,
or its remains

At least my fish is back to normal... for now :good:

well thanks everyone for helping out.
