Black Sand...

Has anyone got a small (10 gals) set up with black sand and wood/slate?

I would like some inspiration before going out to buy some for my hopefully new set up for apistos

Any pics would be great

46ltr fishbox , 10 gallon, sand not exactly black, sorry, dark textured background and a piece of welsh blue slate, just took these quick snaps just now, using a phone so apologies in advance for the poor quality...

If i were you, i would use normal yellow sand. With twiggy wood and slate for caves. Then have some floating water lettus to dim the lights in the tank.

Which species of Apistogramma are you thinking? Panduro would be fine, but any of them which get over 2.5" you really need bigger, 15 gallon plus.

I don't have black sand in my tanks but can happily say it is nice. It really brings out the colours in fish, especially Cichlids!

Not sure what it would look like with wood in the tank though, if you are considering wood?

Black sand/gravel look great when showing colours of fish and plants. Most fish actually prefer the substrate to be drak as it'll make them feel more secure, and in turn they will colour up more.

I like black substrates, they to me look as natural as sand.
