Just bought a Black Sailfin Molly, for my 20g tank! Really nice lookin fish , love him! Im trying to find out some information, but cant find much.Just wondered if anybody had one or they had any info!?

Cheers!

I have bred them in the past, and hope to agian soon. I bred them in freshwater as that was what they were in at the LFS. I would ask the place you bought them from if they keep them in fresh or brackish first. Once you find out that, Sailfin Mollies are pretty low maintance, pretty much like any other livebearer.

your right they are freshwater, but if you dont give them a little salt they are more prone to dieases.

not really. they have pretty much been bred so that salt isn't needed anymore. when i get to start breeding them i'll only use freshwater as most people are not going to use salt or plain dont care.

The guy at LFS didnt mention anything about salt! He was in a tank with lots of other normal black mollys,If that helps?

Sailfin Mollies will thrive in slightly brackish water, although the can be perfectly happy in fresh water. They can also adapt to full saltwater marine conditions.

Slightly brackish seems to be preferred but not absolutely necessary IMO. :good:

I would agree if the LFS has kept them in brackish, i would try to do the same, but i doubt they have.

Do you have a male or female sailfin molly? Mollys do best in groups of at least trio's as they are sociable fish, but you need to stock the genders carefully as they are highly sexed fish and if care is not put into the amount of males and females stocked, you could end up with an unhappy group of mollys.

What other fish do you have in your 20gal and how many?
