My sister has had this black moore for nearlly 2 years now, its in a 10gallon tank with a sucking loach, which is around 2".

iv'e never really thought much of this but i thought id ask to make sure this guy is ok.
he was fully black when we bought him 'like black moores are' lol, but now his top half to his lateral line is black and from the lateral line downwards its gold.

now is this normal?

Hm i haven't heard of black moores changing colour but in a lot of other varieties of goldfish its quite normal for them to change colour and pattern as they mature- perhaps yours sisters black moore is not a full black moore but rather a crossbreed with another variety of goldfish, can you get any pics of the goldfish :) ?

You should be very wary about the sucking loach if it is a chinese algae eater as it may turn very agressive/territorial as it grows older/larger and attack the goldfish. If its not a chinese algae eater, its still worthwhile getting an ID on it, if its a pleco it could outgrow the tank, if it is a hillstream loach it will need a more specialised habitat etc.

yes i could get a few pics for you, ill get them up soon.

and yes it's a chinese algae eater, couldnt think of the name  i got it when i picked up the moore, they gave it to me by accident, it was really small at around 3cms and it was really thin, so i thought id have it anyway and see how it goes, its doing well and doesnt seem to be aggressive towards the moore (atm).

Back to the moore, its got all the characteristics of an original moore  do you think or know that black moores can breed with other goldfish?

Yep moore's can breed with other varieties of goldfish, there's many varieties of goldfish but they can all crossbreed with each other (think of it like how you can cross veilteil betta's with halfmoon betta's, or ribbon tail guppys with delta tail guppys, or different various types of cichlids with each other etc) as they are not different fish in essence but are just goldfish which have been bred to have different external physical characteristics, although of course some fancy varieties of goldfish are more likely to breed with some varieties of goldfish over others  .

The same thing happened to my three black moores when they were left with bad light (accidently) for a while when i went on holiday. My other fish had also lightened up. When i replaced the tube, the fish darkened again.

Well i'm 95% positive that its normal colouration change and not stress-related fading or a disease/parasites or something :good: .

it is very common for goldfish to change color. esp when they are young <4 years old.

black fish always will lose their color, that is why sometimes when ppl have to chose carefully to pick out the black one will keep the whole dark color. e.g panda goldfish, which is part white part black, it is extreamly easy to lose the black color.
thus when you buy a fish, it might look nice , a few months later, it will turn to a ugly.

black one can change to red/brownish one, and then change to white fish.

if you want to your fish to change color, change water frequently, with fresh water.

if you wnat to keep their color, use old water and feed well. however, some fish will change no matter how you try.
