Black Molly's

Sexing them is easy, you need to look at their anal fins.
Female ones have 2 distinct fins either side, whereas a male doesn't. He has a 'gonopodium', which looks sort of tubish.

When pregnant, they get quite fat, and are almost 'boxy' in appearance when seen from the front.

thanks alot Dave! that helps so much, how long before they settle and start to make love? how many little mollys do they usually have?

It depends. One of our males died (old age) over the weekend, so we replaced him.
The new male was trying to get it on the same day he was introduced, despite most of the female ones being heavily pregnant!
They can spawn roughly every 4-6 weeks.
First time round, we had about 10 fry. After that, we regularly get about 30 fry per pregnant molly.

A typical female molly will have 30 to 40 fry. A very young one could have as few as 20 while a very mature female in her prime might easily have 50. The squarish shape people talk about looks like this in a mature female. It will not be as pronounced in a younger fish or an old matriarch.
