Black Markings On Rams

This is my new ram, I have two identical and don't know what sex they are. I noticed some had dark markings on them, is this because they were older or males/females?

Thats not a german blue ram its a gold ram, not sure if its male or female though, maybe a female, as the dorsal fin is not that long at the front.

i would of said the one pictured is a female
