Hi

I have a 6 year old Black Widow Tetra. Just recently random black 'bits' have appeared on its fins and body. Now it appears they are getting larger and newer ones are appearing. Now his eye has like a black coating forming over it...

Any Ideas??

Sorry about the descrption, I can't think of any other way to describe it. I've never seen anything like it before!!

Not really, more like blotches. Some are bigger than others.
Stats are fine, no change in water quality.

Ammonia 0
NO2 0
PH6.8
Temp 24

These markings are the result of skin cell damage. Black markings often appear in areas where the skin has been damaged by ammonia burns, bacterial infections, parasitic infestations, and injuries. These markings are often seen on fish just after a new tank has completed “cycling,â€￾ due to the high ammonia levels. These marks are also common in African Cichlids, especially around the mouth. These are scabs that have come from digging in the gravel or from fighting.

Mature tank, 6 year old fish. No fighting - usually stays out of the way...
The coating on the eye appears to be the worst! oh and round his mouth too

Old age by the sounds of it.

Deformed Black Tetra

I have a Black Tetra who has black growths on it. It is several years old. Its stripes have faded some, but these growths have shown up around its body, some around one gill and around its mouth. The upper part of its mouth has receded somewhat (looks a little like cancer there.) It is still hanging with the school and does not seemed to have slowed down.
Do you have any idea what this might be?
Thanks for any help.
(Mmm, most likely simply the effects of "old age"... cumulative developmental genetic defects... Perhaps Lymphocystis... Nothing to do. Bob Fenner
