posted before about my angelfish (1 x black, 1 x koi, 1 x silver.) koi and silver were really going for black, silver is currently in isolation. koi was in isolation as well but seemed to be calm when re-introduced, however notice tonight it is yet again really going for the black one.

tonight i've noticed what appears to be a white-ish patch on one side of the black angelfish. is this likely to be a disease (if yes which one?) or due to sustained attack by the koi?

advice would be appreciated :/

Is the spot slighty raised or slimey looking? If it is, it might be columnaris which is an external bacterial infection. Injuries caused by the nipping may have made it easier for infection to take hold. The link I posted has info about treatment. :)

Black angels show any scrapes or nips very easily. I've seen them get chased behind a rock, & come out with a white scrape covering 1/4 of their side. Just netting them can cause white marks. Other angels, silvers, golds, etc., scrape the same, it just isn't as visible.

Unless it is raised, or fuzzy, fresh water will keep it from becoming something worse. Mine have spazzed for whatever reason during a water change & vac, look like they have been through a war. They are back to black in a couple of days.

If you could post a pic, that would be great.

another possibility is it is just maturing, and is gainin more colors and is actually a koi angel.

As koi angels mature, they go from nearly white, to showing some black, to orange coming in on the crown & working it's way down. Going from black to showing white as a koi would be possible I guess, anything is possible, but not likely.

It could also be a very dark marble, I've seen them show a little more white as they mature, but unless you get them pea body size or smaller you really won't see this.

Like I said, a pic would be great.

thanks for the replies guys, I stupidly posted my question THEN read previous posts on Angels  . I'm pretty sure it's a scrape, no doubt caused by either my silver or koi Angel. I did have 4 overall (originally 2 koi's) but one passed away :( . seemed to be doing some strange swoops in the water for a short while then died.

anyhow, since the 3 were left, the koi and silver seemed to pair and the black was getting pretty heavy attacks. I've had to isolate the black for now and I'm thinking about buying another Angel this weekend, introducing it and the black back in, giving a total of 4 again. I'm hoping this will result in the black not being picked on as much otherwise I might have to permanently re-house him :/

If you plan on getting another angel, you could do some things that may help with the 2 that are more aggressive. Get a large bucket, or a small tank if that is available. When you get home with the new angel, put some tank water inthe bucket/tank, and add the 2 aggressive fish. Rearrange the decos in the tank you took them out of, add the new fish in whatever way you use to acclimate them, wait about an hour before you add the 2 aggressive fish you pulled out.

This will give the new fish some stress free time to get acclimated, the black angel some time to get used to the rearrangement, and will remove old territories the aggressors are used to. If you can arrange the decos to create a bit of a divider, it will keep the aggressive fish from seeing their more docile tankmates as much. If they don't see them, they won't bother them as much.
