is there anything on the market that gets rid of this black algae or is there a "do it yourself" way?

really ugly stuff aint it but no-one seems to what to give a solution to this problem

Get some otos. They will do the trick. They cleaned up my tank, black algae and all in a matter of weeks! They are so fat that their tail fins dont even touch when they sit on something! Kinda funny.

I was advised by a helpful person on here to get some ottos to deal with brown algea, but when I asked at my LFS he told me that with a tank my size I would need about 20 or more of them. So although I love the idea, it just isn't practical unfortunately. Shame.

If anyone does come up with a miracle algea cure - be it black, brown, green, hair or whatever - they are going to be very rich and worshipped by fish keepers the world over!

oh god, have I had an onslaught of hair and black algae ever since I planted my tank and started adding fertilizers, I spend some time every day to take some hair algae off so it dosen't choke my plants off from light, that stuff grows way too fast, I have an actually cool looking shag carpet of black algae on my fake tree stump though.

Just done a major clean up and water change this afternoon, including removing and srcubbing of rocks and bog wood.

I was amazed to see the real colour of the bogwood coming through as I was scrubbing the brown algea off. I'd almost forgotten what it looked like when I first bought it!

Not true. You dont need 20 otos for your tank size. You only need 1 oto per 30 gallons of water. So you need about 4 or 5.

Try this if scrubbing and washing does not work:

Use a single dose of Maracyn (tablets), not Maracyn-two
This stuff does not harm your good bacteria and is safe for invertebrates.
