So we have been using a calendar for when our fry are due and its working like clockwork at the moment my mikey mouse platy just had another 60+ fry and they are really big similar size to my 10 day old fry its her second large drop and so far ive not lost even 1 guess i have alot of time on my hands. I have also noticed a high protein diet on the week they are due helps them through the birth they dont seem to get as stressed out and are generally alot calmer dueing giveing birth. Pics to follow :good:

Think you will agree these are pretty huge for a few hours old and very well developed

They look pretty big to me.... and healthy too.

Interesting about the high-protein diet - I might have to try that. Thanks for the hint.

NICE!!!!!!!! I just bought 2 female red platy's today. They are so cute! I havent had them since i was 11( 3 year's ago). They have alway's been one of my fav fish, as i love red fish, and the black make's them look darling!(note: i never use those word's in a sentence!)

The high protein diet is a good tip, however don't start it too early in the gestation period.

It is not proven, but I have heard from a few places that a high protein diet may cause oversized fry which leads to the death of the mother during birthing.

The best advice is to make sure you give all your fish a balanced diet, all foods are fine, but in isolation of others they can lead to problems (except for live food of course).

Platy fry seems to be a lot bigger than other fish fry. Congrats! You might want to clean that little thing they are in. Even though it has slits for water to flow through, ammonia from poo can build up fast and could kill them. :( I clean mine with a turkey baster, as well as sliding the holder around for the water to flow through and tipping the top very slightly under the water to make the stagnant stuff flow out. Be careful none of the fry swim out, though. :)

what to you class as high protien diet?

my mickey ouse fry are about that size mine were born last night i only got about 30 tho still my first lot tho im happy none died although got one green egg

I use a medicine syringe to clean mine out.

I call it those high protein granules. Around 55% protein.

It is a particular problem with Goodeids where the females nourish the developing embryos.
