I purchased bio-spira today, my ammonia was at 4. How long on average does it take to see results?

I can't say for sure, but I am interested in what results you get. I have never gotten bio spera to work for me. I know that it is suppose to stay cold or else the bacteria will die. I got mine from a store that keeps them in a fridge but it still didn't work :( .

Cheers,

After about 30 hours, my tests read

pH: 7.4
Ammonia: 1 ppm
Nitrite: 0-.25 (it was alot higher before adding the biospira
Nitrate: 10

If you've cycled your filter within a week then I'd say it works & works well. Assuming your tap water has no Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate in it, then if you added 4ppm of Ammonia and then 30hrs later your seeing the Ammonia reducing and seeing Nitrite AND Nitrite, then your filter is well on its way to being cycled already!

So, also test your tap water stats for Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate so you can make a valid comparison when doing your test.

Tap water ammonia shouldn't really matter so long as it's not abnormally high. We have a reading of 0.25 ammonia in our tap and it's never affected anything.
If the Bio-Spira works, it will take care of whatever is in the tap along with whatever is in the tank.
How long, not sure.
We've tryed Bio-Spira three times but never got it to work for us. First time, I don't think we got a live batch. 2nd and 3rd time, I'm fairly certain it was b/c of the extremely low pH in our tanks that made it not work..
But blahblahblah...

I hope it works for you :)

Just in case, I mean that you need to know the tap water levels so that they can be compared to your current tank water results so as not to confuse.

How do you know your cycle has finished when using Bio Spira? and can you fully stock your tank once you finish as you can with an ammonia based fishless cycle.

:good:

As you would do for normal cycling.

i.e. 4ppm Ammonia is processed to 0 in 12 hrs, no Nitrites and a presence of Nitrate that above tap water (hence why I suggested to test your tap water as well as a control to test against).

It seems that most people don't have any luck using Bio-Spira to do a fishless cycle. I think it is mainly designed to aid in cycling with fish. I've never tried it so I can't really say one way or another. I would like to do an experiment with it but can't do it right now.

Today I test again

Ammonia: Somewhere between 2 and 4, the colors were that disguishable
pH: 7.6
Nitrite: .25
Nitrate: 20

I also added two plants today to aid in the process
