bio spira didn't work

There's a lot of misinformation out there and the manufacturers are bombarding people with unnecessary products and sometimes you make decisions based on this information and things don't turn out as expected. That's why we have a forum, to spread the knowledge. Fishkeeping isn't easy but helping each other sure makes it easier.

I read up on bio spira a lot before buying it, both on this forum and on a few others. It was pretty unanimous with the people who had used it that it does work. The kicker is that you take the chance that the seller did not handle it correctly and there's no way to know if that's the case.

and btw I did use filter media from my established tank-I mentioned that in my original post. Also an hour to the lfs is one thing but an hour with 3 kids (I take them everywhere with me-no choice since there's no one around here to watch them) is another. Especially on $2 gas (which it has gone down but it was pretty high for a while).

Woohoo ammonia and nitrites both at zero tonight. With three 25-30% water changes in the past three days I didn't check nitrates. So I don't know if it was the ammo chips, the water changes or the old gravel or a combo of the above but I'm giddy seeing that zero level. :D I'll continue to check the levels. Now I need to do a pwc on my big tank-the nitrates are up to 20.

Wow, Well I just googled Bio Spira and the link for the TFF topic showed up...Im going to bump this back up from 2 years ago. Well heres my take on Bio Spira, today I got a free packet of bio spira from the LFS I used it on my 10gal. Though the LFS man gave me a packet for 55gallons so I have A LOT extra. It says you can refridgerate it for up to 6 months. By then I might be able to get my hands on a 40gal :) . But we'll see, anywho from research Bio Spira has live bacteria which helps or boosts up the process of cycling. Though im still waiting for my amonia and nitrates to spike. It says if that doesnt happen the cycling isnt done.

It is generally expected I believe to reduce the severity and time of cycling by using live bacteria and cloning. I do it all when starting up a tank. Or if I add new fish or forget to turn the filter off when doing a water change or fish look stressed. It took me less then 3 days to see a new 125 SeaClear System II stable with a huge load of fish. I never saw ammonia but there was an nitrite spike. I don't think I have ever lost fish when I use BioSpira. I have also used TLC which my Cichlid and aquarium shop supplies when I am setting up a new aquarium that I get from him. I always use the BioSpira, too, so I can't vouch for it.

This new aquarium uses a different type of biofilter than any others I have used. It uses a drip type with bioballs. I didn't have any bioballs cloned. I had to do alot of improvising. I used everything I have at hand: swapping ChemiPure, Bio Max, and carbon bags, sponges, adding substrate, decor, transferring water out of established tanks, just sitting a biowheel in the driptray. I shoved sponges down in the skimmer chamber. I couldn't figure a way to hang a power filter on it. I am running around 500 usg in various tanks, so I have some options. When starting a new tank I always have extra BioSpira on hand. Actually I always have extra biospira on hand. If I am cloning and swaping media, I may need to boost the old tank too.
