I am wondering if anyone has tried different BioMedia and found one to be "better"?

Here are some types that I have found, there are many more types these are just the "Big Names"
Seachem Matrix
Filstar BioChem Stars
FilStar Ceramic Rings
Fluval BioMax
Ehfi Substrat
EHFI LAV

I am currently using both the BioChem Stars and the BioMax. The BioChem Stars only because they came with the XP4, I got more BioMax since it was much cheaper then the Stars. I need more filter media and am wondering if there is any difference in all the ones available.

I use the cermic rings that came with my Fluval filters and also Matrix. As long as there is plenty of surface area for the bacteria to colonize (and ceramic media has plenty of surfaec area), they should all be fine. I would just steer clear of any that mention "removing" ammonia or nitrite as that an have an adverse effect on the bacteria colony if their food is being removed by chemical means.

agreed. ceramic rings are good. ehfi substrat is supposed to be really good too
