I just upgraded from a 22 gal tank to a 48 gal tank. The new tank came with a Fluval 4 but I am not happy with the results, sure it pumps a lot of water but even at its lowest setting the current it creates is a bit fast, it's noisy and the fish don't like it much.
Can anyone advise me on a good alternative. :grr: B)

Replace it with a eheim ecco filter, these are designed to be used with planted tanks so have a large media capacity with a fairly slow but steady flow rate.

I'm also a big fan of the canisters, but I'm hesitant to recommend brands since there are many good ones.

i personally would recommend an eheim wet & dry model no 2227 would be perfect for your size tank, (i currently have a 100 gallon tank running a eheim wet &dry 2229) the flow rate is done on a wave like motion and as such provides a steady but gently flow around the tank, they are very quiet filters which are absolutly outstanding when it comes to biological filtration due to the fact that the water within the cannister is highly oxygenated before passing through the media and back into the tank. :D

 just as well I haven't bought my Eheim then yet (still need to work up the mental strength to remove the blasted Juwel filter) - as last time you recommended the Classic over the Ecco - why the change ??

I still recomend the classics for fish only set ups or those with just a few plants but the ecco is designed with heavily planted european style aquariums in mind so is better for a heavily planted set up.

ahhh okiedokie - well thanks for the clarification :)
I'm actually leaning more over towards the planted route now and want to improve the plants in my tank, so will stick to the Ecco then.
