Oscars are very cool but Im looking into other options.

Oscars have the potential to grow to 14 inches, and they commonly do so. Therefor a 55 gallon tank, which is only 12 inches deep, would not provide the fish enough room to even turn around. How would you like to live in your bathtub?

Oh, and ScoutCarcer: I'd look into Jack Dempseys, T-Bar cichlids, Green Terrors, the eartheater Geophagus Surinamensis, the Uura cichlid, and the festae. Many other options exist, but one that stands out is having a setup that incorporates several medium-sized, less aggressive specimens. For starters, try the port acara, firemouth, convict (possible only if you keep a single convict DO NOT get two, as you may end up with a breeding pair), keyhole, festivum, angelfish, and curviceps cichlids. Do some research, make sure you're not overstocked, and be considerate of the fishes' needs, and you should be fine. Good luck!

The minimum tank size for an Oscar is 55 gallons alot of Oscars live in 55 Gallons and are fine. What does the Depth have to do with anything???

When I said "depth" I was referring to the horizontal distance from the back wall of the tank to the front wall of the tank.

Well, if you, fish expert that you are, think they seemed fine, damnit they must have been fine!! If they hadn't been fine, they surely would have stuck their heads out of the water and said "hey, this tank is too small for us and the ammonia from our waste is burning our gills!" Right?

Ok. Unless you feed it birdseed, an Oscar will grow to at least 14 inches. I've personally seen Oscars that approach 16 inches in length, and my Oscar is 13 inches and still growing at a little over 2 years old. But if you'd like to shoehorn an Oscar (or two) into a 55g aquarium, be my guest; I've said my piece and given you some recommendations as to fish that are suitable to live in a tank that size. Again, good luck.

Umm, I know what you meant by depth and a 55 gal tank is 13 inches deep. An oscar has the potential to be 14 inches long. Most Oscars will be between 11 and 13 inches and do fine in a 55 gal tank. You can tell when they aren't if they: run into large tank decorations, stop eating, develope drabber colors, etc.

A 55 gallon is the absolute minimum for an oscar... in other words, it's possible for them to live in one, but personally I think it's a tidge too small. A full grown oscar in a 55 gallon looks cramped and unhappy, like the one at my LFS. In my opinion, unless you've got your heart set on an oscar, you should go for something a tidge smaller like a JD.
