I have a fairly new tank with 3 platies and introduced a male Betta around a week ago. He will not leave the platies alone, and i think killed one from stress of being attacked as her tale was badly nipped.

He constantly chases the other two around the tank, flaring up all the time. Now they are just fed up trying to stay on one side of the tank and they are scared to feed when the betta is around.

Any help? Does he just need time to adjust and calm down?

Is he always going to be this aggressive?

i would take him out and get a female. some betts will live with platys or anyother fish and others just like to be on there own.

females can be just as aggressive - you will either need to remove all the platies and have a betta only tank or return the betta

what size is the tank ?

you could divide of a 5-6" section for the betta and keep the platies in the other bit
penn plax dividers easy to use

would a fish shop usually take problem fish back? a friend at work has a bio-orb tank so he might look after him then he can be on his own.
