Hi does anyone know of a good website that shows pictures and names of all the different types of Betta fish??

I have phoned many pet shops in Manchester and they all say that the only Betta’s they stock are Splendars?? And said that any other type would cost a lot of money… is this correct??

Thanks for your help 

Betta Splendens - Most LFS sell veil tails usually red or blue, however Betta Splendens has many different tail types, I think there is a sticky here in the Betta section, they are still Betta Splendens though.

LFS may think you are asking for different Bettas like Betta Rulitans etc. which are much less common and therefore more expensive.

Yeah I think what you mean Lotte is Betta TAIL types.

I gave you a link earlier... but I'll post it again.

Some tail types off the top of my head:
Veil Tail
Crown Tail
Halfmoon
Plakat
Double Tail
Delta

Yes it was your nice link that prompted me to enquire and all the shops say is that they sell normal betta's called splendars.

Yeah, what you asked the shops was for different species.
In the same way you get different types of goldfish - Common OR Fancy

You can get different species of bettas. Normal ones in shops are Betta Splendens, but there are also wild types such as Betta Ruitilans.

What you meant to ask shops is "Do you do different TAIL types, or do you only stock Veil Tails"

Ah right... so even though they called them normal/splendars they could be different tail types??

I'm going to have to do this with pictures aren't I...

You are wanting a betta splenden. In most LFS, they only come in one tail type and that is Veil Tail. They also very often only come in red or blue.

However if you follow the links I gave you then you'll find Betta Splendens come in various tail forms and in all sorts of amazing colour forms.

Yes I saw lots of different ones on the link.... I really liked the halfmoon one :good: Don't think anywhere sells them though :(

But that red one is lovely :)

The male above is...
Type: Betta Splenden
Tail Type: Halfmoon
Colour Type: Butterfly Gold and Red

That is the one I really really like :)

Is that urs?

Nope, lifted the picture from aquabid.

It seems you have the same sort of taste as me. :D

I like Halfmoon Butterflys

Halfmoon is the type of tail shape.
Butterfly means the shape of the colour, on butterflys it only goes halfway through the fins then switches to a different colour. Normally either white or clear.

You can find Bettas like this in the uk.

Google - Thebettalady
Or try on Ebay
Or their are some suppliers on these boards.

Hehe.... it seems we do :) Do you have any?

Ebay for a fish?? EEK

I have looked into them loads and you can't keep 2 males together can you?

No I don't have any, don't have the room at the mo :(

Ebay for fish...yes. So long as you are buying from a reputable Ebayer.

And no, two males don't go together unless you have a big enough tank that you can divide it (with an opaque divider so they can't see or get to eachother).
But to be able to divide it, the tank must be 10 gallon or more.

Lotte, as I said I've seen crown tails and double tails in BAS, more often veil tails but some very nice colours.

To be brutally honest I'd get a normal cheap but pretty betta as your first one, fancier ones can be 3/4/5+ times more expensive and until you've got your water regime spot on that could be a risky experiment.

Yeah I called them today as I was gonna make a trip over tomorrow and they have none in EEK

By more expensive do you mean different tails other than veil??

sometimes yes - especially for good ones, I've heard them go for £20+ usually more like £6-10 though while veils are about £3-5
