Hi, i dont look in the betta section often as im most into livebearers but im thinkin about getting a betta. Just tell me everything and anything u kno about bettas. Im gona get one from Wal Mart cuz i really wana rescue one and i kno how badly Wal Mart treats its fish. Anything will help. Thanks!!! -heart  , ally86ozzy

My advice is make sure you have a good size tank, it has a filter ( sponge would be good)and get some med`s. If you treat the really bad you will probably need them!!!

Here's my advice. Get a one gallon bowl. Make sure it's a bowl. They can see better that way. Than, get about 5-6 male bettas, and put them in the one gallon bowl. They like to school.

If you can afford it, get a 2.5 gallon. I believe a neutral pH (7.0) would be fine for bettas. Don't quote me on that however. Make sure the tank is heated to about 77F. Gravel or sand is good substrate to have. Add hiding places. Filtering is optional, but it would probably make the water a whole lot better. Get food (Hikari brand is always good), water de-chlorinater, and pH down if you have really hard water. If your going to go about getting plants, get silk plants, because the plastic ones could damage your betta's fins and cause fin rot. MelaFix is something good to have on hand.

That's pretty much the best advice I can give.

Ok so even tho im (kinda) new atr this, but dont bettas fight eachother?? My dads frend has 2 bettas in the same tank with a piece of (glass?) in between to seperatethem, and they were hitting the glass!!!! So... yeah. :/ But seriously anymore advice will help me. Thanks for replying! -heart  , ally86ozzy

Yeah, he was joking about putting them in a tank together!

Get a tank - Mine's 35 litres (UK). 10 gallons is a minimum you want for one - if you want a healthy fish.

Get a small filter - sponge would be best, and one that's not too powerful. If you can cycle it before hand - if you've got another tank 'borrow' a sponge, or if it's big enough seed the one you'll be using in the new tank in it.

Get a heater / plants / gravel etc

And get a a fishy.

This is my tank. I've changed it a lot since I first set it up however it should give you a good idea.

Sadly Mr Betty passed on this week, didn't really want to announce it on here as I'm really upset about it.

Hope that helps you out a bit.

10 gallons is by no means the minimum, the minimum is around 2-3 gallons

the bigger the tank the EASIER it is to take care of your fish. the smaller the tank the more maintance work you have to do and that means less time enjoying your fish.

im probably gona get a divider and give the betta a third of my 10gal, which has a filter and light, so he can have at least 3gallons of swimmy space. My oldest brother (hes 16) said that bettas r a waste of time and money, becuz all they do is sit there and thats y fish stores keep them in cups!!! I explained to him that if u GIVE THEM SWIMMING SPACE THEY WILL SWIM!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY CANT SWIM CUZ THEY PUT THEM IN CUPS!!!!!!!!!! He didnt believe me tho... but who cares?? i kno more about fish than him!!! Well, aside from my tantrum, thnx for replying, but im still open 2 suggestions! -heart  , ally86ozzy

"No it doesn't. That is by all means one of the dumber things I have heard, no offence. I enjoy my fish quite a bit, and I have 1 - 2.5 gallons."

I am offended, THAT WAS NOT A DUMB THING TO SAY. Its true, and I was refering to the very small betta hex's and such anyways. I would rather not spend my time hauling water around and dragging bettas in and out of very small tanks...making them stressed.

But hey if you enjoy changing water by all means do it, just dont turn around and call people dumb for not doing things the same exact way as you, it is offensive and childish.

HEY! ppl no fighting in my topic!!!! make ur own topic called argueing or something and then u can fight. but plz, im tryin to get info. ty all 4 replying. -heart ( :S ) ally86ozzy

Keeping more than one male betta in a tank would cause a fight and i think that people that go round saying that keeping several in tank together so that they can school is one of the dumb`s things i have ever heard! If you want to make a sarcastic joke when someone asks for help you should make it very clear that it is a joke! Get a good book would be a good idea. People can talk rubbish on the Internet, but they don`t usually publish books with crap in the!

just set up a tank as normal with a low flow rate filter with 1 male betta or a couple of females

im gona divide my 10gal, and get 2 females. but my filter is pretty powerful, so im gona move it to the other side of the divider. would this work? also, do betta need a certain temp? thnx! -heart  , ally86ozzy

Good. I now like to be offensive and childish. But you shouldn't impose that water changes can't be fun.

Hey, if your getting a 10 gallon, why not get 5-6 females? You can have that many in that tank. They're called sorority tanks. They're really nice. Female are less likely to fight each other. There is a pecking order, but that is natural. If you were to do this, introduce them all at once.
