One of my male bettas in my divided tank has been a little down since I moved him, but today I'm really worried about him.
He seems to have no energy, swimming along the floor instead of in the open water. I've tried to point the filter at the side of the tank to disrupt the flow but it hasn't made a difference. He's been on myxazin for a while to cure fin rot, but I recently discovered that he's a fin biter, so I stopped medicating. He hasn't had any for around a week, and now I've noticed that some of his scales seem a little "flaky" along his back. Just now, I saw the tips of those scales and some of his fins are turning black. I realise the fins could have fin rot, but I don't know what's going on with the scales!

Water parameters are:
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 15ppm

Tested using API master liquid test kit.

Does anyone know what's wrong with him? Any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

dont you mean 15ppm for the nitrates?

i'd start going with the finrot again as this came on when you stopped using it.....

Oh, yeah, sorry!

Would fin rot cause him to be lathargic and change the scales black?

finrot is indeed an infection and will wear the fish out as it tries to fight it......... as for the scales and fins... black is usually a sign of rotting..... but if it came on when you stopped treating for finrot then it may be a more powerful return of the fungus.....

Oh gosh. :-(

Do you think I should continue to treat him or should I euthanise him?

if it was me then i would treat him... and if it looked like he wouldn't make it, then i would send him off... i work on a system where i think along the lines of "is there the remotest possible chance of curing this fish" and if the awnser is yes.... i attempt to cure it... if it is no, then i make it's last few hours/days comfy and full of plenty of food and warmth before putting it to sleep.....

Okay. I'll treat him for a week and see how it goes.
I hate seeing him like this :-(

He's doing an awful lot better today! He's been mostly swimming around and only resting occasionally! I also picked up some eSHa 2000 which treats a wide range of diseases, so hopefully he'll be better in no time! :)
