Betta's In A Shop...

Some of those other pictures are truely shocking! Those poor fish!

In a way I am actually quite relieved... I happen to like this fish shop, and always thought that the Betta boxes seemed to let them down a bit, but now I see that they are actually better than most in this respect :good:

Even so though, surely these fishes need more space than ANY of these containers to swim around in?

Yes they do. Far more. Personally I won't keep one in less than 5 gallons under any circumstances. Still, the cubes in the first picture are definitely more than what many shops choose to keep them in. I also see no reason for the cups and I refuse to accept that a shop has no space. A filtered larger tank can easily be divided into even 3 gallon sections . A healthy betta in a bigger space is more likely to attract a buyer than a half dead scrap of life with finrot and gods know what other health problems. There is no excuse at all for cups and tiny pots. None. Selling less goldfish for example - which are unsuitable for the average tank a typical family seems to buy " for the kids" anyway - to people who have done no research , and instead giving the bettas more room along with a concise and easy to read/understand care sheet would be something I would like to see in the future.

Yeah Im also very impressed with the shop in the first picture, they keep their bettas very well. My LFS uses little boxes in the corner of the other tanks.

Thats actually the proper way to ship betta. If you have too much water they will run out of oxygen, and if you have too much space they will be thrown around and be damaged.

I realize why they are shipped that way but I'm sure the ride is still miserable for the fish.

i disagree a betta should be kept with the same respect as other fish they are one of the most stunning fish and demand more respect my gf has hers in a 5 gallon tank that is a nice home for a betta she has 2 platies in there aswell and they all get along fine
