I just wanted to post this here to find out if this is the 'norm'.

I know Betta's have to be carefully kept, and tank mates carefully chosen, but is this the way they are normally kept in a shop?

It just seems like such a small space for them, and they all look so unhappy, fins all down and tucked away... :(

No, those tanks are actually huge compared to the way they are usually kept in fish stores. They are usually kept in something more like this:

Bettas here are kept in cups. Those cubes actually look great to house Bettas for sale...

Some of those other pictures are truely shocking! Those poor fish!

In a way I am actually quite relieved... I happen to like this fish shop, and always thought that the Betta boxes seemed to let them down a bit, but now I see that they are actually better than most in this respect :good:

Even so though, surely these fishes need more space than ANY of these containers to swim around in?

I would think that those are set up that way more to sell the cubes than for the bettas. Most shops don't have the space to keep 20+ bettas in larger containers and they usually only have them for a few days before they are sold.

I would have to agree.... :(

It's sad that things like this get sold as betta HOMES... they aren't even sufficient for an overnight stay.

I would only ship a betta like that in a kordon bag, surely that much splashing would occur to damage their fins as much as if they had been shipped in a larger bag. This also promotes fin chewing (and melafix wasting by betta rescuers who can't stand seeing them kept badly).

I personally have seen bettas in a shop kept in drinking cups - that's 250ml or 1/16th US gallon - which are so narrow the fish could not sit horizontally in the water, but were obliged to tilt up or down because of the lack of space.
