hello all
right i have 2 male bettas one for almost a week and one since sat, they are both settling in well, getting another in 2 weeks  just cant stop buying them, or looking at them on tinternet. My question being do bettas need filters, mine have. I was just woundering as i have seen sooo many pics on this site and others with no filters, and if no filter then is there a cycle  Was just woundering if mine really needed them, they are in 14liter tanks, think thats around 2.5gal(uk)

14 lires is 3.1 gallons (UK), which is good for s SINGLE betta, are you keeping them all together in the same tank? if so are you using a tank divider?

Filters are very good to have, although most people believe they are not ESSESNTIAL to keeping a Betta, but of course it will prolong the life of the fish.

no they have a 14liter tank each, they have lights filters and heaters, was just woundering it the needed the filter after seeing so many without any.

I like having filters in all of my tanks. Reassures me that the water quality/stats are all A-OK and that no ammonia or nitrite is building up. B/c of my impatients.. I've seen what non-cycled tanks will do to fish.. so I won't ever go that route again w/ an unfiltered, uncycled tank.

Filters aren't necessary though. People who don't have filters usually do 100% water changes. Or small water changes numerous times throughout the week w/ one 100% every once in a while.

Personally I would always try a filter with a new betta and guage the fish's reaction. Some don't like filters, some are OK with low-flow filters. A lot of people keep them without filters, but if your betta doesn't mind it being there then I think it is better to have one.

Thanks guys for your replys, both of mine have filters and one is very happy, but my black one who is bit smaller isnt as happy, cant see anything wrong with him him, he is breathing fine, but spends alot of his time at the bottom not swiming around alot, hes eating fine and flaring now and again. Was woundering if it could be the filter  I have the flow turned down as far as it will go. Other than lurking around the bottom there are no other symptoms.
