Bettas And Creature Keepers...

Since I am heading off to college in a month I was looking for a tank for my betta that is going to be easy to transport and is cheap. I have a 3 gal that he lives in now.... but that is staying here to be come a hospital tank at home. I saw flautist's (is s/he even on here any more?) two from a while ago... and really like the idea.... but i am open to other ideas.
Also do I need to put a filter in there? if so please let me know your suggestions......

I am also thinking about adding a 2nd betta (probably a female ...for something different)..this betta thing is awefully addicting!

Critter keepers are fine for bettas (providing you dont mean the really small ones which I dont think you do)! You dont need to have filters in them just do very regular water changes and the betta should be fine! Personally I think if you want a female betta your best off getting her her own tank (critter keeper) as apart from the risk of them spawning they will harras one another which isnt really a good idea as you are more than likely to end up with one of them dead! Sorry to put a downer on that idea!

Oh definately..... I dont want my little Shy boy being beat up by a bully girl! I had 100% intended that she get her own tank.
As for the size... I was looking at the medium or large ones... I dont like to think those bettas live in the little teeny tuna cans..... plus I'd rather have a pretty tank that takes up more room!

As for no filter.....I have never had a tank with out a filter.... do i need to add in some shrimp to be a clean up crew or no?
Also what is everyone's stance on Plastic plants??? I have ALOT from my other tank... and was wondering if they are ok to use with bettas.

The larger critter keepers are great. I've got a 3.5 gal and my betta is very happy in it.

Just to say - you dont' have to keep your current tank at home! What I would do is, scoop your betta up into a small jar with a lid (I use well-cleaned peanut butter jars! They are perfect) but first poke holes in the lid. I had my dad drill holes in mine. This is his transport cup! He'll probably be really good for at least a day in there. Then, you can simply empty out the water from your betta's current quarters, and bring it along with you!

My betta travels to my parents every weekend, and he's doing fine. I bring my tank along and put him in for the weekend, then scoop him into the peanut butter jar again to head back home on Sunday.

But if you really want a hospital tank then well... go ahead.

when i've had unfiltered critter keeper type tanks i've given then 60%+ water changes twice a week, and kept them barebottomed (with lots of silk plants) because it makes it SO much easier to keep clean!!!

i think taking the fish backwards and forwards would put unnecessary stress on them, especially if the water chemistry at the two different locations is different.

my biggest reason i am leaving that tank at home as it is a PITA to move..... also it is more tall than wide.... and I know bettas like horizontal movement and not vertical.

Aside from that... I need to pull a dwarf gourami out of my main tank.... he keeps getting sick... and i donno if my tetras and minnows are picking on him... so moving him in to a "sick bay" to treat him and let him get some R and R.

as for the PB jar idea... I may use that for transporting him to/from school!

He isn't stressed at all. He's a real happy fish - he's never been sick in all the time I've had him, hmm that'd be about 6 months now. I considered just leaving him at my place for the weekend, but I am a bit worried about the temp, as I can't keep it constant too well, and without me being there, it's hard to monitor.. might get too hot or too cold... and my mom loves to see him

I checked the water with strips and they're about the same. And I also acclimate him each time I fill up the tank.

travelling fish...I like it...we used to have a rat that used to come on holiday twice a year for about 3 years. self catering..we used to smuggle the cage in with towels on top of it and the rat in sons pocket...then we had 2 after him but they were right wimps and used to hate it

I love critter keepers. I have 9 of the medium-sized ones (I think they hold about 2 gallons)... I really like the dimensions on them, and they're stackable which is super cool. Although I wouldn't stack more than just one on top of another because water's so heavy...

Stackable? Mine don't seem quite stackable... the lid is at a sort of angle.

Maybe you have the kind like the one on my dresser? Those aren't stackable but the ones on my shelves are.

Holy moley!!

Yeah mine are different. I've seen people post pics of them on here before. They aren't exactly rectangle, they are a bit rounded on the edges, with a clear ventilated hood, no light. The bottom is kind of, uh, not flat - it's lower in the centre than it is on the edges. The sides are raised a bit. Not really sure why, cause it's annoying for gravel. I don't want it deeper in the middle. Maybe it's for accomodating an under-gravel filter, though I don't know much about those.


Yours look nice though.. lol.. I want.

The other day I picked up some storage containers, that look to be about 4 gallons each, in preparation for my new bettas The lid isn't ventilated, but I can fix that with a drill.

So... I went a bought two of them and a new betta.... a girl!!! She's so TINY in comparison to my boy! As for tail type and color.... I am stumped..... the tail ALMOST looks like a crown tail!!! As for color.... she is a peachy creamish color for her body but her fins have a tint of red! She's quite active.... which is good!

I'll get pictures later... after she settles in.
