I have read that bettas do not need them but was curious if they would be detrimental to a betta because of the bubble nest. Any info would be handy. He is alone in an un filter5ed 2 gallon tank that is going to be water changed weekly

I have an airstone with my Betta but I don't know hw it affects the bubble nest so can't answer that one. However I would say Bettas really do need a proper filter. And is the tank heated? They need heating too.

Air stones are useless, the bubbles are so large and the contact time is so minimal that hardly and air is dissolved into the water, if you want them for decorative purposes feel free. The Betta will more than likely build its bubble nest away from the bubbles that the air stone produces.

2 gal should have at least 2 partial water changes a week.
Cheers

The unfiltered tank should receive some form of circulation. An air stone circulates water quite effectively so the current it produces will keep the water oxygenated. By changing water as Loraxchick has suggested, you can avoid a dangerous build up of toxins. Do not worry about disturbing a bubble nest since it serves no purpose in an unfiltered single male container. The only time the bubble nest means anything is in a breeding setting and that will not be an unfiltered container.
